March 7000 BC Meeting

The March 7000 BC meeting will be held Saturday, March 20 in the Community Room on the second floor of the Santa Fe Library Main Branch, 1:30–4:30. This will be a working meeting, so take this time to make comics; we'll probably conduct business for about the last half-hour. After the meeting, we'll move on to dinner.

The library is in downtown Santa Fe. There's limited, paid (but cheap) parking in the back, street and lot parking around, and possibly the lot across Washington Street at the First Interstate Building will be open. The library is on a stop for the Santa Fe Pick-Up and the meeting's timed for those taking the Rail Runner from Albuquerque.

7000 BC will be at the first ABQ Collector's Con of 2010 on Sunday, February 28 at the gym at New Futures School at 5400 Cutler Avenue NE. Admission from 10:00-5:00 is only $1, but there's $5 early bird admission starting at 9:00.

We'll have issues of our string anthology, which features works from local comics creators, along with books from our members. We'll be doing sketches for a limited time during the day.

Creating Comics Panel by Panel | Thursdays, February 18–March 18 | 4:00pm-6:00pm | CE South Building, University of New Mexico Campus | Albuquerque, NM

For ages 13–17. Explore the many aspects of creating comics, from scripting and storytelling to layouts, panel placement and fluidity, and thumbnailing. Along the way, learn about comics theory and history. Class participants will produce stories individually or collaboratively, culminating in a completed mini comic ready to copy and distribute. Taught by Peter Ziomek.

The February 7000 BC meeting will be held Saturday, February 13 in Conference Room #2 at the Albuquerque Main Library, 1:30–3:30.

Free parking for up to 2 hours in the Very Special Arts Garage at 5th and Copper. Bring your parking stub to the circulation desk for validation. There is also on-street metered parking.

This will be a working meeting — bring comics to work on, take time to collaborate, or get input on your projects. After the meeting, we'll move on to dinner.

November's gathering takes place at Artisan in Santa Fe, where we'll be meeting and working on a jam. So if you're interested in writing, drawing, and self-publishing your own comic — or even just like reading and talking about them — stop by to meet the group and participate in the jam. There's no charge, no previous experience is required, no particular skills are necessary, just an appreciation of comics and a desire to have some fun with them.

24 Hour Comics Day 2009 Wrapup

24 Hour Comics Day 2009 at the Harwood Art Center had a great turnout this year! We may have had the largest attendance of any location in the world, with 41 people making the attempt (including 2 who worked from home and kept in contact with us throughout the night).

We had 11 people who made the trek from Santa Fe, Ms. Webber-Bey and a big group of her Comic Club students from Albuquerque, and Mike Hanlon who came all the way from Alamogordo! Thanks, Mike. Most folks stuck with us at least until morning. In the end, 16 24-page comics were completed by 18 creators (2 were made by 2 people collaborating).

Start time is 1:00, which means that anyone coming from Santa Fe can ride the Rail Runner to the meeting.

Once, again, 7000 BC is happy to be a part of the annual science fiction and fantasy convention Bubonicon. We'll have a table in the dealers room next to Jamie, along with our friends Robert and David.

In addition to the table:

7000 BC will lead a free workshop on Saturday in the Rio Grande Room, 3:00-4:30, taking participants through the steps in making a comic;
we'll be working on a jam comic, a sequel to last year's Perry adventure. Anyone is welcome to stop by and add a panel to the story, 10:00-12:00 Rio Grande Room and 1:00-3:00 at the Art Show; and
our artists will again be creating another live rat drawing — to be raffled off on Sunday night, with the winner to be drawn as the final rat; tickets available at the table.

7000 BC has produced a special edition of string for Bubonicon 41 — where Everything's Better With Zombies. Download a PDF of string: Bubonicon 41 for a truly alternative look at the walking dead.

Jeff Benham, currently co-creating Peoplings, has released a new, more affordable edition of forever all. This new edition is partially handmade, with metallic hand-detailing on the cover. The Mel Patch Art Collective is proud to present Bomb The Gazebo, a day celebrating music, art, performance and creativity from the heart of Española at the Plaza de Española on Saturday, August 8th, from noon until 6:00.

Performances feature: musicians Chris Abeyta with members of Lumbre del Sol, Dredging the Lake, Reference Man, Daylight Rabbits, Arturo Montoya, and Davíd Garcia; the hip-hop breakdance group Holy Faith; and local well-known poets.Several groups of graffiti artists will create large-scale art all day long, and local artists will showcase their work. There will be a fabulous custom car show all day long, with amazing works of vehicular art. Food will be available at this free event — all ages are welcome.
